What actually differs

Name the handful of axes that separate one AI tool from another.
Not "which is smartest"
The question people ask is which model is best, and it has no answer, because the tools are not ranked along a single line. Asking it produces an argument rather than a decision.
The useful question is narrower: for this task, which differences matter?
The differences that show up in real work
Access to current information. Some tools search and cite as they answer; others work only from what they were trained on and what you paste in. This is the single largest practical difference, and it decides more tasks than anything else.
How much you can hand it at once. Tools differ in how much material they will take in one go — a page, a report, a folder. It matters the moment your input is longer than a message.
What it can do besides write. Images, voice, running code, reading a spreadsheet, reaching your other tools.
How closely it follows instructions. Whether a constraint you set in line one is still being obeyed by paragraph six.
Where you sit is a difference too
Which tools reach your documents, your mail, your code and your calendar is a real constraint, and often decides the choice before quality does.
A slightly weaker tool that can already see the file you are working on frequently beats a stronger one you have to paste into.

Which AI model is the best one to use?
ANSWERABLE
I need to check twelve supplier contracts for clauses that differ from our standard terms. The material is long, it is confidential, none of it is public, and I need to be able to point at where each answer came from.
The second question answers itself: long input rules out anything that takes a page at a time, confidential rules out pasting into whatever is handy, and needing a location rules out anything that cannot quote the source. No ranking was required.

Then tell me which differences actually decide it.
What a good result looks like
You should end up with two or three requirements that rule most options out. If the answer is still "any of them would work", the task genuinely does not need a careful choice — use whatever you already have open.
