Pick the right surface

Choose between a chat, a project and an agentic session.
Same model, very different tools
Most people use Claude as a chat box and nothing else, then find it forgetful and repetitive. The chat box is the right surface for maybe half of what they are doing.
Claude is offered through several surfaces, and the difference between them is not intelligence — it is memory, permissions and how much work happens per instruction.
The four broad shapes
A chat — one question, one answer, no persistence beyond the thread. Right for quick work.
A project — a workspace with shared context and files that every conversation inside it can see. Right for anything you return to.
An agentic session (Claude Code, Cowork) — Claude acts over multiple steps, reads and writes files, runs things. Right when the task has steps rather than an answer.
A connected session — Claude reaches your other tools through connectors. Right when the information it needs lives somewhere else.
How to choose
Ask two questions.
Will I come back to this? If yes, a project — otherwise you will paste the same background in again next week.
Does this have steps, or an answer? Steps means agentic. An answer means chat.
Almost all of the frustration people report with Claude is a surface mismatch: doing multi-step work in a chat box, or repeating context that should have lived in a project.
WORKED EXAMPLE
WRONG SURFACE
Opening a fresh chat every Monday and pasting in the same brand guidelines, product description and last week's posts before asking for this week's content.
RIGHT SURFACE
A project holding the brand guidelines, product description and an archive of past posts. Each Monday: "This week's angle is the warehouse rota story — four posts." Everything else is already there.
Identical model, identical output quality — but the second removes a repeated ten-minute setup and eliminates the risk of pasting a stale version of the guidelines.

Audit which surface your recurring work belongs on.

I want to work out which of my recurring tasks are on the wrong surface. Ask me what I use you for regularly. For each one, ask whether I come back to it and whether it has steps or just an answer. Then tell me which should move to a project, which should be an agentic session, and which are fine as one-off chats. Say what specifically I would stop repeating in each case.
What a good result looks like
Anything where you paste the same background more than twice is a project you have not created yet.
