STEP 1: KNOW YOUR MARKET VALUE FIRST
You can't negotiate what you don't know.
Market rate research prompt: "Help me research the market salary for [JOB TITLE] in [CITY/COUNTRY] with [X] years of experience in [INDUSTRY]. What sources should I check? What's the typical range? What skills command the top of that range?"
Sources to check (tell AI to help you interpret them):
- Glassdoor, Levels.fyi (tech), LinkedIn Salary, Indeed Salary, Payscale
- Your country's labour market data
- Job postings for equivalent roles — they often list salary bands now
STEP 2: BUILD YOUR CASE
Quantify your impact: "Help me turn these work achievements into quantified impact statements for a salary negotiation: [DESCRIBE WHAT YOU'VE DONE]. I need specific numbers, percentages, or outcomes where possible."
Frame your ask: "I want to ask for a [X]% raise. My current salary is [SALARY]. My market rate research shows [RANGE]. My achievements in the last 12 months include [LIST]. Help me frame this as a business case, not a personal request."
STEP 3: SCRIPT THE CONVERSATION
Negotiation opening: "Write the opening 3 sentences for asking my manager for a raise. I want to: open positively, state my ask clearly, and invite a conversation. Keep it direct, not grovelling."
Handle the 'budget isn't available' response: "My manager said there's no budget right now. Write 3 responses: one that asks for a timeline, one that negotiates non-salary compensation, and one that sets up a 90-day review."
Handle the 'I'll think about it' stall: "My manager said they'll think about it. Write a follow-up email I can send 5 days later that's professional and keeps the conversation moving."
Handle a counter-offer below your ask: "They offered [X] but I asked for [Y]. Write a response that thanks them, acknowledges the offer, and makes a clear case for meeting in the middle at [Z]."
STEP 4: NEGOTIATE YOUR WHOLE PACKAGE
If salary is fixed, negotiate everything else: "They can't increase my base salary. What other compensation elements should I negotiate? For each one, write the sentence I'd use to ask."
Options to negotiate:
- Remote work flexibility
- Additional annual leave
- Training and development budget
- Earlier performance review date
- Signing bonus or one-time payment
- Equity or profit sharing
- Flexible hours or 4-day week trial
STEP 5: IF YOU'RE CHANGING JOBS
Handling salary questions in interviews: "I'm interviewing for a role and they've asked for my salary expectations. The posting listed [RANGE]. I currently earn [SALARY]. How should I respond to give myself the best negotiating position?"
Counter-offer negotiation: "I received an offer of [AMOUNT] but was hoping for [AMOUNT]. Write the email where I professionally counter with [AMOUNT], justify it, and express genuine enthusiasm for the role."
WHEN THEY SAY YES — GET IT IN WRITING
"I just verbally agreed to a new salary/role. Draft a brief email confirming what was agreed so there's a written record. Details: [PASTE WHAT WAS AGREED]."
