AI won't get you the job. But it will help you compete better. Here's how to use ChatGPT at every stage of your job search.
STEP 1: WRITE A STRONGER CV
Prompt: "Here is my current CV: [PASTE CV]. I'm applying for [JOB TITLE] roles. Rewrite my bullet points to be achievement-focused, not task-focused. Use strong action verbs. Quantify results where possible."
Tailoring for each role: "Here is my CV: [PASTE]. Here is the job description: [PASTE]. Identify the gaps and tell me which parts of my CV to emphasise or rewrite to better match this role."
STEP 2: WRITE COVER LETTERS THAT DON'T SOUND GENERIC
Prompt: "Write a cover letter for [JOB TITLE] at [COMPANY NAME]. Here's the job description: [PASTE]. Here's my background: [2-3 SENTENCES]. Tone: professional but human. Length: 3 short paragraphs. Don't start with 'I am writing to apply...' — start with something engaging."
Then personalise it. Add a real detail about why you want that specific role. AI gives you the structure; you add the authenticity.
STEP 3: PREPARE FOR INTERVIEWS
"I have an interview for [JOB TITLE] at [COMPANY] next week. Give me the 10 most likely interview questions for this role. For each question, suggest what a strong answer should cover."
Then practise: "Ask me [QUESTION]. I'll answer. Then give me honest feedback on:
- Was my answer clear and structured?
- Did I give a specific example?
- What should I add or cut?"
STEP 4: RESEARCH THE COMPANY
"Help me research [COMPANY NAME] before an interview. What should I know about:
- Their products/services
- Their recent news or growth
- Their culture and values
- Smart questions I could ask the interviewer"
STEP 5: NEGOTIATE YOUR SALARY
"I've been offered [SALARY] for [JOB TITLE] in [CITY/INDUSTRY]. Is this above or below market rate? How should I approach negotiation? Give me the exact words I could use to counter-offer professionally."
BONUS: LINKEDIN PROFILE OPTIMISATION
"Here is my LinkedIn summary: [PASTE]. Rewrite it to be compelling to [TYPE OF EMPLOYER] looking for [SKILLS]. Use first person. Keep it under 200 words. Make it specific, not generic."
