This guide accompanies the ChatGPT Masterclass video. Use it alongside the video for reference, or as a standalone resource.
MODULE 1: GETTING STARTED
What you need:
- A free OpenAI account (platform.openai.com or chat.openai.com)
- For best results: ChatGPT Plus ($20/month) for access to GPT-4
The 3 things most beginners get wrong:
- Being too vague ("write me a blog post")
- Not giving context (who you are, who your audience is)
- Accepting the first result without iterating
MODULE 2: THE CHATGPT INTERFACE
Key features to know:
- Custom Instructions: Set your background and how you want ChatGPT to respond (Settings → Custom Instructions)
- GPT Store: Access specialized GPTs for specific tasks
- Code Interpreter: Run Python code, analyze data, create charts
- Image Generation: DALL-E 3 is built in (Plus only)
- Memory: ChatGPT can remember things across conversations (toggle in settings)
Custom Instructions setup: "What would you like ChatGPT to know about you?" → I am a [ROLE] who works with [AUDIENCE]. I specialize in [NICHE]. I create content for [PLATFORMS].
"How would you like ChatGPT to respond?" → Be direct and concise. Avoid filler phrases and generic openings. Give actionable advice. When writing, match a professional but conversational tone. Always offer to iterate.
MODULE 3: CORE PROMPTING TECHNIQUES
THE ACT AS TECHNIQUE "Act as a [SPECIFIC EXPERT]. You have [X years] of experience in [FIELD]. Your expertise is in [SPECIALTY]. With that context: [YOUR REQUEST]."
THE CHAIN OF THOUGHT TECHNIQUE Add to any complex problem: "Think through this step by step before giving me your final answer."
THE EXAMPLE TECHNIQUE "Here's an example of the style/format I want: [EXAMPLE]. Now create something similar for [TOPIC]."
THE CONSTRAINT TECHNIQUE Add to any prompt: "Important constraints: [LIST]. Do not [WHAT TO AVOID]. Must include [WHAT TO INCLUDE]."
THE ITERATION TECHNIQUE After any response:
- "Improve this by making it [MORE CONCISE/BOLDER/MORE SPECIFIC]"
- "Give me 3 alternative versions"
- "What's missing from this?"
- "Make this sound less like AI"
MODULE 4: POWER FEATURES
Analyzing files: "I'm uploading [FILE TYPE]. Analyze it and: [WHAT YOU WANT]. Focus on [KEY AREAS]."
Data analysis with Code Interpreter: "I have this dataset: [UPLOAD OR PASTE]. Analyze it and: (1) identify key trends, (2) flag anomalies, (3) create a visualization, (4) give me actionable insights."
Image generation prompts: "Create an image of [SUBJECT]. Style: [STYLE]. Mood: [MOOD]. Colors: [COLOR PALETTE]. The image should convey [FEELING/MESSAGE]. [TECHNICAL SPECS: 16:9 / portrait / square]."
Web browsing: "Search for [TOPIC] and give me: the most important recent developments, key players, and what experts are currently debating."
MODULE 5: ADVANCED WORKFLOWS
THE PERSONA WORKFLOW Create a custom persona for consistent output: "You are [NAME], a [ROLE] with [BACKGROUND]. Your tone is [TONE]. You always [KEY BEHAVIORS]. You never [AVOID BEHAVIORS]. You're helping me with [TASK]. Stay in this persona throughout our conversation."
THE RESEARCH WORKFLOW
- "Give me an overview of [TOPIC] — key concepts, main debates, and what I need to understand."
- "Now go deeper on [SPECIFIC ASPECT]. What do experts say about this?"
- "Summarize the most important insights and give me 3 practical applications."
THE WRITING WORKFLOW
- "Help me brainstorm [TOPIC]. Give me 10 angles."
- "I like [ANGLES]. Create an outline for a [FORMAT] covering these."
- "Write the first draft based on this outline."
- "Now edit for [CLARITY/CONCISENESS/TONE]."
- "Final check: flag anything that sounds like AI."
MODULE 6: USING GPTs (CUSTOM GPTS)
Access via the GPT Store (ChatGPT Plus)
Most useful GPTs:
- Consensus: Research with citations
- Canva: Create designs in conversation
- Code Copilot: Advanced coding assistance
- Diagrams: Create flowcharts and diagrams
- PDF AI: Chat with PDF documents
Building your own GPT:
- Go to Explore GPTs → Create
- Set a name and description
- Add instructions (what it knows, how it behaves)
- Add knowledge files
- Set capabilities (web browsing, DALL-E, code)
MODULE 7: WHAT CHATGPT CAN'T DO
Be honest with yourself about limitations:
- It can make factual errors — always verify important facts
- It can't access real-time information by default
- It doesn't truly "understand" — it predicts
- It can't replace human judgment on sensitive matters
- It has a knowledge cutoff date
The rule: Use it as a first draft and a thinking partner, not as a final authority.
CHEAT SHEET: MOST USEFUL PROMPTS
Write anything: "Act as a [EXPERT]. Write a [FORMAT] about [TOPIC] for [AUDIENCE]. Tone: [TONE]. Include: [ELEMENTS]." Edit anything: "Edit this for clarity, conciseness, and impact. Show changes: [PASTE TEXT]" Research anything: "Explain [TOPIC] as if I'm a [LEVEL]. Include: key concepts, examples, and 3 practical applications." Solve anything: "I'm facing [PROBLEM]. Think through it step by step. Give me a clear recommendation." Create anything: "I need [OUTPUT]. Here's the context: [CONTEXT]. Here are my constraints: [CONSTRAINTS]. Go."
